Rivers are rated in the United States on a Class I through VI scale (from easiest through most difficult).  Throughout this website we discuss various rapids and sections of river referring to their specific class.  Following is a definition of whitewater river rapid classifications:

Class I: EASY - Waves are small, passages clear. No serious obstacles.

Class II: Medium - Rapids of moderate difficulty with clear passages.

Class III: Difficult - Waves are numerous, high and/or irregular with rocks and eddies. Passages are clear through narrow requiring expertise in maneuvering.

Class IV: Very difficult - Long rapids with powerful, irregular waves, dangerous rocks, boiling eddies.  Powerful and precise maneuvering required.

Class V: Extremely difficult - Exceedingly difficult long and violent rapids, following each other almost without interruption.  Riverbed is extremely obstructed.  Big drops, violent current, very steep gradient.

Class VI: Un-runnable - Don't go there!

P: Portage - Boats must be carried around an un-runnable rapid or one beyond your equipment/expertise.

Further Information:

Note that all rivers should be run with approved Personal Flotation Devices (otherwise known as lifejackets).  The U.S. Coast Guard rates PFD's and you should look for a Class III or V jacket to tackle any river.  High flotation devices are preferable.

Additionally you should wear protective head gear (helmets) on all Class IV or higher rivers.  As for age limitations…..they vary depending upon the class of river, the equipment utilized, the experience level of the crew and boat captain.  Generally, commercial outfitters require an age limit of 7 or 8 years of age for Class III whitewater runs and 14 years of age for Class IV or higher.
